Comicfest 2010 in review (with pictures!) April 19, 2010

So, as all of you know, this past weekend marked Boulder Comics’ first convention experience at the Denver Comicfest.  Here, for those who weren’t able to make it, or for those who were there but in too much of a drunken haze to remember, is the weekend in review!

FRIDAY was our first day, and probably the slowest, but we had several stalwart volunteers and table-sitters ready to greet the people who trickled past our table, including Matt, John, Mike, Billy, and me (Melanie).  We only sold 5 comics the first day, but our spirits were high and we woke up early the next morning, ready for:

SATURDAY, which was by far our busiest and craziest day.  We sold a ton of comics, added further volunteers Jeffrey and Cami and (briefly) Dan and Tim to our table, and got to talk to a bunch of interesting characters (many of whom were dressed up as Jedis or Klingons from the Sci-fi convention next door) about our group.

Probably the highlight of everybody’s day, though, was the Inkslingers Showdown, where our group got to compete in a rapid-fire drawing contest against much more well-established groups of Denver cartoonists, like Squidworks and the Denver Drink-and-Draw, as well as a Wild Card team composed of a couple brave audience members.  It was a fierce battle, forcing group members to depict subjects ranging from “Narcoleptic Chimp Symposium” to “Transvestite Gladiators” in under three minutes.  In the end, a tie-breaker contest was decided by an impromptu 30-second dance-off between myself and one of the Drink-n-Draw folks — which sealed Boulder Comics’ victory!

(Picture stolen from Cami — thanks!)

We were also later awarded this cardboard trophy by Lonnie Allen of the Drink-n-Draw, which will forever have a seat of honor in the Boulder Comics Trophy Case:

SUNDAY was a bit slower than Saturday, so we had a bit more time to relax and hang out at the table.  It was also the day that we got to run the Awesome Comic Jam, which attracted about 20 participants, despite happening at the same time as a panel run by famous comic babe Amy Reeder Hadley.

Sunday was also the day that most people went around making trades of their comics with other artists.  Seemed like people were coming away with impressive stacks of new comics this way — I know I’ve got plenty of reading material for the next week!

All told, I don’t think anybody sold quite enough of their comics to cover printing costs, but we were able to pull in about $200 as a group, which is pretty cool.  And, save those minis, folks, because John Porcellino is hosting Cowtown Comix Fest this summer — probably in August.  That gives us about 4 months to bust out the next issue of all our series, which sounds like it’ll be a cinch, but probably still means 90% of us will be inking and printing furiously at 2 AM the night before.  Such is the cartoonist way.

Anthology reprint April 11, 2010

Ohhh man look at how sweet these are: full-color cover, 24 black and white pages on the inside, including two new comics which weren’t in the previous print (courtesy Cami & me), and all around significant increase in sexiness.

That gigantic box in the third picture?  100 copies of said anthology.

Printing costs ended up being about $1 per book.  I’m thinking we should try selling these for $2 apiece at first — we can adjust the price if people are buying them like crazy (and really, who wouldn’t?)

Since someone asked about this at the last meeting, here’s how I ended up finishing that story I posted a couple months back.

Here’s a samplin’ of the semi-intoxicated hijinks that happened Friday night at Mountain Sun.

The object of this jam was to alternate writing a sentence or drawing a picture describing the sentence/image above you; each page was folded over such that you only could see the sentence or drawing immediately above yours.  Our translation skills abound.

Has anyone else heard of this/participated in it?

Basically, the idea is to draw one short comic about something you did every hour you were awake on some particular day.  February 1st is sort of the national cartoonist holiday devoted to this task.

If you wanna see a ton more of these from all over the place, check out the main forum: http://www.tencentticker.com/msgbrd/viewforum.php?f=27

Here’s something I’ve been working on lately.

Sorry the color on the third page is a little funky — haven’t had a chance to go back and make it match the other pages yet.

This came from an angry place.

Lines were all done by hand, coloring in Photoshop.

Assuming nothing goes wrong on the technology front, we’re printing minis today!

If you want to join the printing party, meet us at the Kinkos near Baseline & 27th Way at 1 p.m.  If you get lost/confused, you can email me or try my cell number (which I just emailed to everybody).

UPDATE: Kinkos finished the printing a couple hours early, so I have the pages and am currently in the process of assembling them.  So don’t show up again at Kinkos tonight if you were planning to — I’ve already got the books.  But DO give me a call if you want a stack of ‘em to distribute amongst family, friends, unsuspecting strangers, etc.!  My number’s in the email I sent you all.

Mini-Anthology Update (and puppies) November 7, 2009

For those of you who weren’t at the meeting on Wednesday: Due to popular demand for an extension (you lazy bastards you), the submission deadline for the mini anthology has now been pushed back to Thanksgiving — Nov. 26th.  Meaning, you’ve all got another three-ish weeks to get your submissions ready and emailed to me.

Guidelines:

* These minis will be photocopied, so keep it black-and-white.

* Try to pick pages which will render well when shrunk to 8.5” x 5.5” (i.e., half a sheet of printer paper)

* To cover printing costs, we’re asking artists to give $5 to the Photocopy Fund per page they want included.  This will cover the printing of 100 copies.

* Email images (.pdfs or .jpegs are best) of the all pages you want included to me at melanie dot gillman at colorado dot edu.  Also, include a short bio/website address if you’d like — this will go on the Contributor’s page.

* Do this all ON OR BEFORE THANKSGIVING.

And last, for anyone who’s interested, here are a couple pieces of extra credit:

* This anthology will also need a cover!  If you want to submit one, send it my way.  If we get multiple submissions, we’ll put it to a vote.

* Once all the submissions have been gathered, we’ll need some volunteers to help with the printing and distributing.  We can pick some weekend date and all storm Copy Experts, then go a-rampagin’ around Boulder, leaving a trail of destruction and/or mini-comics in our wake.  Booze might also be involved.

And, that all being said, I leave you with puppies.

Fun with brush pens October 8, 2009

Here’s a quick little 3-pager I drew to try out some new fancy-schmancy brush pens.

Also, to follow up on the mini-anthology idea: in order to give us some time to get our pieces ready, I think the most fair way to go about this is to set a submission deadline.  Therefore, watch as I pull a date out of my ass: Sunday, November 1st.  If you want a piece of yours to be included in the mini anthology, then send me your black and white .pdfs or .jpegs before that day.  After that, we can get together something of a photocopying/assembling team to put them all together, then merrily spread them around Boulder for the enjoyment of all.

A reminder: as this is going to be a free-to-the-public, not-intended-for-retail-sale kind of mini, you will need to chip in for printing costs if you want a piece included.  $5 per page will cover your entry into 100 copies (or, we hope, 100 potential new readers) — so, a one-page comic is $5, two pages is $10, and so on.

Also, if anyone has an idea for a good cover and wants to submit that, send it my way too!  If we get multiple people who turn in cover ideas, we can schedule a pen-nib fight to decide, or maybe just put it to a vote.

In any case, all images can be directed to me at melanie dot gillman at colorado dot edu.
